Climate Change Theatre Action 2025 Festival Theme "The Time is Now"
Since 2015 Climate Change Theatre Action (CCTA) has used theatre to inspire artists and audiences to take action on the climate crisis and then together to imagine and create the world they want to live in. Specifically CCTA is a worldwide festival of short plays about the climate crisis presented biennially to coincide with the United Nations COP meetings. Each year fifty playwrights are commissioned to write a play responding to a prompt. These plays are then freely available to anyone who wants to organize an event in their community during the festival’s time window. Organizers of these events are encouraged to think about an action that can be incorporated into their event. In the past 10 years CCTA has held over 500 events in almost three dozen countries, reaching 70,000 people.
Earth Rising is proud to support the 2025 festival set to take place between September 19 to December 20, 2025. This year the theme is “The Time Is Now.” Just last month the plays were made available to potential collaborators interested in organizing an event in their community. These collaborators represent theatre groups, universities, schools, conferences, scientific organizations, environmental organizations, and individual artists. So far at least 50 collaborators are set to host events in their community.
Additionally, the plays will be presented at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland, the world's largest performance arts festival. Finally, at the end of the festival in 2026 all 50 plays will be published in an anthology alongside essays from event organizers.
Going forward, CCTA will rely upon their archive of over 200 existing plays and work with collaborators to organize events around these plays and potentially even including educational resources. The work CCTA shows the importance of a well rounded approach to the climate crisis and the different avenues we have for inspiring people to take action.
