Earth Guardians Togo's Reforestation and Agroecology Project Helps Farmers Restore Land
Over the past year, across two communities in southern Togo, Earth Guardians Togo has been supporting farmers with the knowledge, tools and resources needed to restore degraded land and strengthen local food systems.
Prior to the training beginning, Earth Guardians Togo conducted a community assessment to better understand local farming challenges and ensure the workshops addressed farmers' specific needs. Following the assessment 100 men and women participated in hands-on agroecology training.
Participants learned how to produce natural fertilizers and crop protection treatments, including Bokashi compost, Super Magro biofertilizer, and biological pest control solutions. These skills were immediately applied to their own farms. Alongside training activities, community members planted 5,000 trees and shrubs with the goals of restoring soil fertility, reducing erosion, improving biodiversity, and strengthening resilience to climate change. Earth Guardians Togo also distributed agricultural equipment including hoes, machetes, wheelbarrows, cultivators, and other tools to support farmers in their daily work.
During monitoring visits, farmers successfully addressed challenges such as snail infestations by protecting nurseries with net enclosures. The project also adapted to the local contexts, shifting away from a planned community forest model and focusing on community needs.
Looking ahead, Earth Guardians Togo hopes to build on this momentum by supporting irrigation infrastructure and providing additional training in financial management and digital tools.
Earth Rising is proud to have supported these efforts and excited to see how this project progresses in the future. To learn more about the work Earth Guardians is doing around the world visit their website here.
