From Climate Emergency to Climate Survival
This week we here at Earth Rising Foundation want to highlight the incredible work of Climate Mobilization Project. Climate Mobilization Project aims to grow a movement for a just, ‘emergency-speed’ mobilization to save our planet. In their own words, Climate Mobilization Project is working to shift climate action ‘from climate emergency to climate survival’. This shift is crucial in order to address the systemic causes of climate change and mitigate the disparate impacts of the climate crisis on those least responsible.
Climate Mobilization Project works towards ‘climate survival’ by helping to support local movements rooted in values of community care and mutual aid. Specifically, Climate Mobilization Project is supporting new approaches to movement-building that directly confront the global crisis through ‘survival programs’ that build food energy, water, care, and land sovereignty and economic self-determination while also involving more people in the movement for climate justice.
So far, Climate Mobilization Project has advanced these ideas on the national scale. They are now focused on growing local based campaigns in every community across the US. A great example of this is seen in their work with Green Side Up Farms which recently culminated in a new platform for community ownership and economic self-determination on Las Vegas’ Westside and a new power-building membership organization of Westside residents. This work builds upon Green Side Up Farms’ existing model for growing hyperlocal produce in an area otherwise considered a food desert. This work is a great example of how Climate Mobilization Project is supporting and learning from organizations as they promote climate survival programs that prioritizes community self-determination.
We at Earth Rising are eager to see this work continue and take root in communities throughout the US as a meaningful step towards a just and sustainable future.
