Green America's Soil Carbon Initiative
We are excited to be partnering with Green America, whose Soil Carbon Initiative (SCI) supports farmers and food companies shifting toward regenerative agriculture practices.
Green America’s goal is to transition 90% of agricultural acreage in the U.S. to regenerative farms by 2030. Although regenerative agriculture is growing in popularity as a climate solution, Green America observed that lack of guidance is a major barrier for farmers looking to adopt regenerative practices.
To close this gap, Green America developed SCI’s Farmer Guidance – a set of resources including a network of SCI-approved regenerative agriculture consultants, weekly “office hours” for farmers to troubleshoot issues that arise with vetted experts, a Q&A platform, opportunities to connect with other farmers, and learning frameworks for a variety of crops and soil conditions.
The SCI team is developing 42 Farm Plans, which model implementing technical guidance on farms adopting regenerative practices. 42 Founding Farmers in SCI’s pilot program across the US have already committed to transitioning 22,000 acres of farmland to regenerative land management. Pilot farmers in this program hail from farms of all sizes and climates across 17 states. Analyzing their diverse soil conditions will ultimately help future SCI farmers facing similar challenges.
SCI seeks to address the roots of racism and colonialism in the agricultural system by supporting farmers from frontline communities across the United States who have been disproportionately burdened by food system issues. Green America’s team is conducting outreach to BIPOC farmers across the US to ensure that SCI’s technical guidance and Farm Plans are inclusive and supportive of their needs.
